The Ides of March: The UEZ in Millville

I read in today's Daily Journal this early AM that due to the delay in UEZ money, Millville will postpone 2 events and kill off the Summer Block Parties. The MDC is requesting a loan from the city.
MILLVILLE -- Glasstown Arts District officials are requesting a loan from the City Commission to offset money they've lost since the state froze Urban Enterprise Zone funds.
The Millville Development Corp.'s board, which oversees the district, also officially postponed the annual SummerFest and BikeFest events planned for this summer, due to a lack of money

In the past, Millville First has advocated canceling the block parties, so they were ahead of their time. If the UEZ is ended, the citizens will see the result if the anti-UEZ group had won a majority of the 5 Commission seats. As the Daily Journal reports in today's paper

The board postponed the annual summer events due to a lack of money to prepare and advertise the events. Ayres said the board normally would have done a lot of preparation and advertising work for the popular events by now, but couldn't because of the funding shortage.
"We know we can't pull together successful events by starting in April," she said.
The city's summer block parties also are in jeopardy. The city last year used UEZ money to pay for its three annual summer block parties. But Mayor Tim Shannon said last month he would not use UEZ money for the events this year. Shannon said he would rather use any available money for economic development

This could mean the slow end of the Arts District. Yup, there are clouds over High Street for sure. There is a good sign. One of the banks has donated $5000.00 to the MDC. Millville Savings and Loan should be congratuated. Now why can't other business help out. How bout some of the well-compensated lawyers. Its time to stand up for Millville couse there are planty who want to bring it down and say "I told you so!"

I don't understand this comment. Supposedly, your pro-UEZ group won the majority of the Commission seats. What is happening to UEZ?

Governor Christie will announce whatever he wants about UEZ regardless of who sits on Millville's City Commission.

Robert you are correct that it would not matter who was on the Commission. I was just stating the fact that Millville First has done its level best to undermine the UEZ for years.

Yet, it wasn't Millville First who dismantled it. You seemed to want to blame them as justification for why they should not have been voted into office. By voting for your guys, you are getting the results you didn't want.

That's the story here. The gratuitous swipe (again) at Millville First does nothing to serve your thesis.

I agree with Mr. Owens on this. Why the constant digs at Millville First? I'm sure this group had nothing to do with Christie's decision on stopping the uez funding. He probably doesn't even know who they are.
