G. K Chesterton in the New Yorker

After a day of taking care of home business, I decided to check out a copy of the New Yorker that was sitting around the house. Yup, we have a subscription. I have not read it in awhile but I did read in the July 7th and 14 edition about a writer named G.K Chesterton This man is interesting and I never heard of him before but he is really perceptive. One quote that I liked was this one:
"An adventure is only an inconvenience rightly considered. An inconvenience is only an adventure wrongly considered"

Is that cool or what??

I was discussing the politics of the day at
Brenner's Brew in Bridgeton Saturday morning
I was told I would like this.
Indeed I do!!

Here's How to do It

Sand is a lousy place to bury your head.
With crabs nipping at your lips
and grenheads biting your butt,
it's easy to be distracted
from the pretense
of not knowing what the hell is going on.

What with high tide rolling in
when you've just packed down
the last shovelful,
wind blowing your labor
into the dunes
and kids building castles
on your neat little heap,
there probably isn't a worse place
to remain oblivious.

I say,
if you're determined to go through the trouble,
make it stick-
get real stuck.
Encase your head in concrete,
Jimmy Hoffa style.
Hear, see, smell no evil
forever.

CNN's Gloria Borger Makes an Early Prediction

CNN's Gloria Borger suggests a Barack Obama - Joe Biden presidential ticket on Wolf Blitzer's Situation Room on January 10, 2008. That is quite astute reporter!!
I can not EVEN believe this one. He is a smart man but says the strangest and oddest things.
This comment takes the cake.
PLEASE DO NOT CHOOSE HIM. I do not want to see these videos over and over again. If Obama does pick him better be ready for some questions.

A Real Issue in Cumberland County

County's choice of teen pregnancy program raises questions

By By LINDA FORBES • August 20, 2008

Last week, Cumberland County Freeholder Director Lou Magazzu garnered attention by his public finger-pointing tirade (now on YouTube) accusing Millville resident and Democratic stalwart Mark Krull of being a Republican spy.

The next day, Lou's behavior was even more bizarre. He accepted an award for his response to the county's teen pregnancy crisis. The odd thing is, Lou has done nothing on behalf of teen pregnancy prevention other than promising the agency that gave him the award (Community Health Care Inc.) $100,000 in no-bid funding from the county for a teen pregnancy program.

The proposed award raises a number of questions.

  • Why is the county planning to give $100,000 for pregnancy prevention to this particular agency instead of offering funds on a proposal basis to other effective nonprofit agencies that could have conducted the same or similar programs? Unlike these other agencies, Community Health Care has not been prominent in the county's collaborative teen pregnancy prevention efforts.
  • What happened to Freeholder Doug Rainear's Children First Initiative, which also was going to address teen pregnancy? Kicked off over a year ago with much press, the Children First Initiative was supposed to respond to the county's dismal Kids Count statistics. Now, well over a year later, that effort seems to have fizzled, despite investment of considerable county staff time and other resources. Notwithstanding the hard work of dozens of volunteers who met and planned, the county has yet to fund any proposals coming from this effort.
  • How is the program that the county is funding, "My Daughter's Keeper," going to respond to the county's teen pregnancy epidemic? Cumberland County has twice as many teen pregnancies as the second highest-ranking county in the state. The situation is deplorable and merits a coordinated crisis response by state, county and local authorities.

The freeholders' response is to fund a program that is going to help mothers communicate with their daughters and offer services to improve girls' self-esteem. It offers workshops that include "role playing, theatrical skits, and dinner-date package incentives and giveaways." Who is going to hold Community Health Care accountable for this program's effectiveness in preventing teen pregnancies, and how will effectiveness be measured?

And, once again, why is Community Health Care uniquely equipped to conduct this social services program, when its primary mission is health services delivery?

  • More than half of our county's teen births are to Hispanics. Will My Daughter's Keeper be culturally relevant for these girls? How will this program serve the Hispanic population?

I put these questions out in public because I believe the county's taxpayers deserve answers.

But even with satisfactory answers to these questions, Lou Magazzu's acceptance of an award recognizing all he has done to prevent teen pregnancy is especially ironic, given his apparent lack of interest in a report on teen pregnancy in Cumberland County presented to the freeholders earlier this year.

The icy reception and two-minute time period Magazzu, who was then freeholder director, granted for presentation of the report spoke volumes.

    August Lurches ON..

Another odd weekend. Started the weekend with the men coming over and trimming 2 trees and removing one completely. 3rd Friday was very packed, I think it was the most packed on ever. The drawing for the Levoy Theater was done and I can assume that I do not have a new hybrid car
I went to pick up Carolyne's last 2 pays and managed to get one The 2nd one that pays to the 8th is being held up due to "questions". On Saturday I started the day with tennis then a 2nd attempt to get the final check but the powers that be still state they have formulate more questions toward the end of the week. Lets hope all this can be resolved soon!!! Its really time to move on!
    Well, enough of THAT.....
Later that day we soothed ourselves with ice cream at the Custard Corral out on E. Broad Street. I think this is the area that Liberty Village might want to build on. Today( Sunday) was mellow. I did not play tennis, instead I just slept in and it felt good. We had a nice walk with our dogs as well and you can see part of it here. Now its time to rest and work on positive thoughts such as getting my deposit on the house the we could not buy.

Big Lou Calls Me a Republican!

Check this out. I was getting a Pizza at NY Style Pizza for us and some kids from the neighborhood
when I stumbled upon a town hall meeting of Cumberland County NJ Democrats and
this happened.. Below is the offending video

From the Millville News August 14 2008
    County Dems, GOP unload

The candidates maintained the only "serious" offenses - such as drunken driving, leaving the scene of an accident and driving uninsured - would fall under the surcharge.

Suddenly, at one point, Magazzu approached Michael Krull, of the city school board, who had just walked in with a digital camera and was videotaping the proceedings, and accused him of "spying for the Republicans."

Krull stated he was not a Republican.
Magazzu relented, stating, "Sorry, but that's where we are in politics today, and it's sad."
    Krull left shortly afterward.
Later, Magazzu said he would "bet money" Krull was a spy for the Republicans.
The meeting got back on track and shifted toward taxes.
Magazzu defended the current freeholder board, stating it has lowered county property taxes.
"And we will continue to do so," he said.

A Day in the Life 2008

With all due respect to the BEATLES

I heard the news today oh, boy
About a woman who was made to leave
And though the news was rather sad
Well, I just had to gag
    5pm when arrived the hags
She blew their minds and took it vary far
She didn't notice that the votes had changed
A crowd of people stood and stared
    They'd seen her face before
    Nobody was really sure why
    she was made to grieve
and that is why we gonna leave...

I saw a blog today oh, boy
The Family Center had just won the war
A crowd of people clapped their hands
But I just had to moan
    Having felt alone
I'd love to find a new home..

Woke up, got out of bed
dragged a mouse across my screen
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup
and looking up, I noticed I was late
Found my glasses and grabbed my lunch
Started my car and had a hunch
Found my way to work and thought about the jerks
Somebody spoke and then I felt the hurt
    Ah..Ah...

I read the news today oh, boy
Four thousand holes in Holly City USA
And though her faults were rather small
They had to count them all
Now we know how many holes
it takes to fill the City Hall
I'd love to turn on you

    STRIKE!

20 Years ago, our union SEIU Local 668 went on strike while Bob Casey (father of Bob Casey the new Pa Senator). It lasted 3 weeks during a long dry hot Summer. Going on strike is rough and expensive for everyone involved. This was the only strike I have been involved in my 20 years with the State. The photo are the scabs crossing our picket line and we made the front page of the Norristown Times Herald. This too was a difficult Summer

    Tired

Did have some conversations today. I asked about electricians and plumbers.
At that point, Well, I was in a spot cause I like and trust
I told him my truth, that I did not think of calling anyone since it was a foreclosed
house . As you know, our minds are in a different place
I went home and chilled out then painted more of the shed and went to the Oar House.
I met and we got to talking and he stated in as many words that
to find out why something happened follow the relationships.
After he left, I met some dude who works at the Motorsports Park. He was
    a pompous ass.
I think you are going to see me gradually withdrawal from things here.
This process really started with my
